Jan Håfström: The Polar Sea II, 1987. Glass and wood.

JAN HÅFSTRöM - A retrospective.

August 27 - October 23, 1994.

Curator: Lars Nittve

With his, at the same time romantic sensibility and contemporary inellect Jan Håfström has formed an oeuvre unique to post-war Scandinavian art. He can be described as the quintessential nomadic artist. Using painting as a base, his body of work has expanded into sculpture, drawing, book objects and site specific installation, in a development that rather can be characterized by an Eternal Return than a linear chronology.

Although Jan Håfström has been showing in New York and to lesser extent in Germany, France and Italy since the late 70's, his presence has without any doubt been the strongest in the Scandinavian countries. His influence on younger artists in Finland, Norway and Sweden can hardly be overestimated.

Jan Håfström was born 1937 in Stockholm. He lives and works in Stockholm.
