NOWTOPIA

June 3 - August 27, 1995

Curator: Lars Nittve

(Nutopia) is about in-between states. About art, seeking freedom within a zone where neither one thing nor another prevails. Neither "the art world", nor "the real world". Neither utopia, nor dystopia.
Nowtopia is about a state of active equilibrium. The echo of the utopian projects of modernism is still there, but not the weight of their pretensions. Its works can neither save the world - nor art. At the same time, however, they dodge with ease the black hole of dystopia.
Nowtopia is about small and changing radicalities. About at the same time nomadic and precise materializations of our present state. Both light and rigorous, comical and troubling. Precise materializations, but also actual deeds. Reactions, possibly even solutions, to problems. Not for everyone and not for ever, but maybe for someone, now. The future is now, Nowtopia is here.

Participating artist: Clay Ketter, Dan Peterman, Yutaka Sone, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Jeffrey Wisniewski, Andrea Zittel.
